AEOI director hopeful about Geneva talks

6 Jan 2014 - 8:42

The director of the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran (AEOI) has expressed hope about the Geneva talks between Iran and the world’s six major powers over Tehran’s nuclear energy program.

AEOI Director Ali Akbar Salehi made the remarks on Sunday on the sidelines of a ceremony held in the organization headquarters to commemorate the country’s martyred nuclear scientists.

“Most of the differences have been resolved and hopefully, some of the remaining differences will be resolved gradually at a meeting that should be held this week,” Salehi said.

Salehi also said the number of AEOI experts attending the talks has been increased.

Iran Deputy Foreign Minister for Legal and International Affairs, Abbas Araqchi had said earlier in the day that more experts would join the upcoming expert-level negotiations.

Experts from Iran and the five permanent members of the United Nations Security Council - Russia, China, France, Britain and the US - plus Germany concluded their latest round of talks on December 31, which were aimed at devising a mechanism to implement the landmark interim deal reached between the two sides in the Swiss city of Geneva on November 24.

Under the Geneva deal, the six countries undertook to provide Iran with some sanctions relief in exchange for Iran agreeing to limit certain aspects of its nuclear activities during a six-month period.
