Iran-US trade rises despite sanctions: Ambassador

1 Feb 2014 - 22:30

Baku, Feb 1, IRNA – Although the United States has put its allies under strong pressure to reduce economic cooperation with Iran, the trade between Iran and the US has increased, said Iranian Ambassador to Baku Mohsen Pakaeen on Saturday.
Speaking to Azeri Trend news agency, Pakaeen said US exports to Iran between January and April 2013 shows a 39 percent growth compared to the same period the previous year, reaching $118.5 million.

Trade between the two countries in 2012, the first year after imposition of tough sanctions on Iran, showed an increase of nearly 10 percent, Pakaeen said.

The ambassador said that trade between Iran and the US between 2009 and mid-2010 stood at over $300 million, then it began to reduce due to increasing unilateral and international sanctions on Iran between mid-2010 and mid-2012. Since then Iran-US trade has begun to increase once again.

Experts believe that with the implementation of Geneva Deal between Iran and the five permanent UN Security Council members plus Germany, a tangible increase in Tehran-Washington trade is most likely.
