An Iranian deputy foreign minister says Iran and Morocco have agreed to resume diplomatic relations after a four-year freeze.
Deputy Foreign Minister for Arab and African Affairs Hossein Amir Abdollahian said on Wednesday that Iran and Morocco plan to reopen their embassies in Rabat and Tehran in the near future.

The decision followed discussions between Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif and his Moroccan counterpart, Salaheddine Mezouar, during a recent telephone conversation.

Amir Abdollahian said in their talks, the ministers stressed the significance of resuming diplomatic ties.

Relations between Iran and Morocco were severed in 2009 following a series of disputes on regional issues.

In a sign of improving relations, the Moroccan foreign minister invited Zarif to attend the 20th meeting of the al-Quds Committee of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation in January in Rabat.
