Oscars 2014: 12 Years A Slave wins best picture, Matthew McConaughey wins best actor

3 Mar 2014 - 9:18

Best Picture Oscar goes to 12 Years A Slave, which also wins Best Supporting Actress for Lupita Nyong'o and Best Adapted Screenplay for John Ridley, whose resume includes Three Kings (1999) and TV shows Third Watch and The Wanda Sykes Show.
12 Years' win in the biggest category shows that Academy voters do not mind a harrowing depiction if it is in service of a message.

It is the first-ever Oscar nomination for Matthew McConaughey and he wins. He made a cameo in The Wolf Of Wall Street, in which he hums and beats his chest, a thing he actually does to loosen up as an actor and which Scorsese asked him to do on camera.
