At least 12 people are killed in a spate of bombings targeting different areas of the Iraqi capital Baghdad.
According to Iraqi officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity on Wednesday, nine bombings, including seven car bombs, rocked six areas of the capital, AFP reported.

More than 60 people were also injured in the bombings, the officials said.

At least three people were killed and ten others wounded in a car bomb attack which happened in the Karrada district of Baghdad.

Three other people lost their lives in a car bomb attack in the Shuala area in the capital's north.

Bombing attacks in the capital’s northern neighborhood of Shaab and southeastern district of Zafaraniyah also left a number of people dead and wounded.

Figures released by the UN mission to Iraq showed that a total of 703 people were killed in Iraq in February, which is close to that of January’s death toll of 733.

Some 564 civilians and 139 members of security forces were killed in the violence in the country, while 1,381 people, including 1,179 civilians, were injured. The report  does not mention the death toll in the western Anbar province.

Iraqi troops, backed by local Sunni tribesmen, are currently fighting al-Qaeda-affiliated militants in the country’s western regions, including the Anbar province.

Iraq’s Interior Ministry has said that militants have launched an open war in Iraq and want to push the Middle Eastern country into chaos.

Violence erupted in Anbar last December when security forces cleared a protest camp which the government said was used by militants for launching terrorist attacks
