The Persian New Year, Nowruz, has been celebrated throughout Iran and its neighboring countries.
On Friday, people in Iran celebrated Nowruz by visiting their elders and loved ones and by going on trips.

During Nowruz, Iranians set the Haft Seen spread as an expression of their traditional, spiritual and social values.

In Iraq, thousands of Kurds celebrated the day with their own local traditions on Friday.

People in the Afghan capital Kabul also gathered to commemorate the beginning of the Persian New Year.

People have also celebrated Nowruz in different cities across Turkey.

The ancient celebration of Nowruz was registered on UNESCO's Intangible Cultural Heritage list in May 2009.

Nowruz, literally meaning New Day, is the start of the Iranian New Year. It occurs on the first day of spring in the northern hemisphere, which is March 21 for three years and March 20 in leap years on the Western calendar.

Nowruz is celebrated in Iran, Afghanistan, Azerbaijan, India, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Pakistan, Turkey and Uzbekistan.
