Iran's senior military official said that while Washington claims to be fighting the Islamic State, documents prove that this group was a product of the CIA.MOSCOW, December 4 (Sputnik) Official documents inpossession ofIran's Armed Forces suggest that the Islamic State (IS) was created bythe US Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), Iran's senior military official told Sputnik Thursday.
"While Washington claims tobe fighting IS, documents inour possession prove that this group is a product ofthe CIA," Iranian Armed Forces Deputy Chief ofStaff Brig. Gen. Massoud Jazayeri said.
"The fact that US Armed Forces supplied weapons and uniforms toIS sinceforming the [anti-IS] coalition testifies tothe falsehood ofassertions regarding the nature oftheir fight against [Islamists]," Jazairi added inan interview withSputnik.
Earlier this week, Brig. Gen. Jazayeri denied reports that Iran's Air Force had conducted airstrikes againstIS targets inIraq incoordination withthe United States as "totally untrue." In September, media reported that Iran's Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei had declined Washington's proposal tocooperate inthe fight againstthe IS.
Islamic State is a Sunni jihadist group that has been fighting the Syrian government since2012. In June, the IS insurgency spilled overthe border, seizing control ofIraq's Mosul and announcing the establishment ofan Islamic caliphate acrossterritories that have fallen underits control. A US-led international coalition ofover 60 states is carrying outairstrikes againstIS targets both onIraqi and Syrian territory.
