Iran’s Foreign Ministry has condemned as completely unjust a sentence issued against an Iranian national in the United States.
Ministry Spokeswoman Marziyeh Afkham on Sunday condemned the eight-year-and-one-month prison sentence issued on Friday by the US District of Connecticut against Mozaffar Khazaee, an Iranian-American, on the accusation that he tried to transfer information on American military aircraft out of the United States.
Khazaee was arrested last January after being accused of attempting such transfer.
“Unfortunately, a number of our country’s nationals are imprisoned in the United States and some other countries for unjustified reasons and over the allegation that they breached the illegal and illegitimate sanctions [against Iran],” Afkham said.
She called the US government’s arrest and imprisonment of Iranian citizens for hollow and unfounded reasons “unacceptable.”
The Islamic Republic has invariably announced that it considers the apprehension of its citizens for hollow reasons and sanctions breach to be illegal and against international law, Afkham said, adding that Tehran insists on the innocence of these people and demands their prompt and unconditional release.
