Iranian minister: Europe expected to be 'independent' of US

IRNA - Minister of Housing and Urban Development Abbas Akhoundi said in a meeting with German Federal Minister of Transport and Digital Infrastructure Alexander Dobrindt that Europe should act independently and committedly in regards with the Iran-G5+1 nuclear deal.

Saying that the US administration showed an unacceptable and unpredictable behavior and passed new sanctions on Iran, Akhoundi added, 'We have seen many positive stances in Europe in the past few months, including those of [Chancellor of Germany Angela] Merkel, [German Vice-Chancellor and Federal Minister of Foreign Affairs Sigmar] Gabriel , and [High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Federica] Mogherini; we expect that all sides of the JCPOA (joint Comprehensive Plan of Action) deal be loyal to their commitments defined in the deal.'

He added, 'We both know that JCPOA is more than a mere commercial contract and can expand security in the region and the world; therefore, Europe needs to pursue the contracts in the framework of the JCPOA and tackle issues.'

He also said that Iran and Germany can definitely agree on a plan for big commercial transactions in Iran, Central Asia, and the Far East, adding, 'In rail industry, we have large projects, including expanding infrastructures, constructing express railroads and renovating the fleet, that need billion-dollar investments.'

He also proposed a Germany-Iran-China rail corridor be built and said that the infrastructures for the corridor already exist.
