Iran supports Syria-Turkiye reconciliation
Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian has met with his Syrian counterpart Faisal Mekdad in Moscow, ahead of a quartet meeting on Syria, expressing support for Syria-Turkiye reconciliation.

Amirabdollahian and Mekdad met on Wednesday morning and had a working breakfast afterward.

The Iranian foreign minister arrived in Moscow late on Tuesday to attend the quartet meeting on Syria which is chiefly aimed at restoring normal diplomatic ties between Damascus and Ankara.

Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian has welcomed the political process aimed to settle the Syria-Turkiye conflict, saying Tehran is ready to help promote the negotiations between the two sides in this regard.

The Islamic Republic is ready to help consolidate and promote the diplomatic efforts aimed at normalizing relations between Turkiye and Syria, he said.

He added that the meeting between the four foreign ministers in Moscow would advance the settlement of issues pertaining to Syria through political approaches.

Turkiyesevered its relations with Syria in March 2012, a year after the Arab country found itself in the grip of deadly violence waged by foreign-backed militants.

Now, after 11 years, the two neighboring countries are taking steps toward reconciliation.

Late last month, defense ministers and intelligence chiefs of Russia, Syria, Turkiye, and Iran met in Moscow in a bid to work out a detente between Damascus and Ankara and discuss the withdrawal of Turkish troops from the war-ravaged country.
