Iran sanctions affected Western country’s economy: German MP

A senior German lawmaker from the Christian Democratic Party (CDU) says Western sanctions against Iran have affected the economies of the sanctioning countries.
Deputy-head of the Christian Democratic Union faction in the Bundestag, Andreas Schockenhoff, said on Saturday that the sanctions were not only causing problems for Iran, but also had a negative impact on the sanctioning countries.

He added that during nuclear talks between Tehran and the six world powers, the Sextet both attempted to resolve the Iranian nuclear issue, and create a new political opportunity to weaken and then cancel the sanctions regime.

The United States, Israel and some of their allies have falsely accused Iran of pursuing non-civilian objectives in its nuclear energy program.

Under the unfounded allegation, the US and its European allies have imposed sanctions against the Islamic Republic.

Iran and the five permanent members of the United Nations Security Council -- Russia, China, France, Britain and the United States -- plus Germany, signed an interim agreement in Geneva on November 24, 2013.

Under the deal, the six countries undertook to provide Iran with some sanctions relief in exchange for Iran agreeing to limit certain aspects of its nuclear activities during six months. It was also agreed that no nuclear-related sanctions would be imposed on the country within the same timeframe.

The two sides have agreed to start implementing the agreement on January 20.
