Russia, China to receive economic boost from Iran sanctions relief -Experts

Experts claim that the economies of Russia and China could benefit significantly from the potential lifting of sanctions against Iran as well as from Iran possibly joining the Shanghai Cooperation Organization.

WASHINGTON (Sputnik) The economies ofRussia and China could benefit significantly fromthe potential lifting ofsanctions againstIran aswell asfrom Iran possibly joining the Shanghai Cooperation Organization, experts told Sputnik.

Iran could do a great deal ofbusiness withRussia inthe future, The George Washington University International Business and International Affairs Professor Hossein Askari said onTuesday.

On Monday, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov told Rossiya Segodnya news agency inan exclusive interview that lifting the sanctions againstIran will allow Tehran tomake full payments onits deal withRosatom, Russias national nuclear energy corporation, bringing inbillions ofRoubles tothe Russian budget.

Askari explained that cooperation betweenMoscow and Tehran would be primarily inthe nuclear and defense sectors.Military purchases fromIran could be quite massive, because Iran needs tobuild its air defense system, tomodernize it all ofthat, I think, will be done withRussia, he said.

Cooperation inthe field ofnatural gas will become the third major area ofRussian-Iranian future collaboration, Askari added, sinceIran has the second largest reserve ofgas afterRussia.

I do believe that there will be cooperation betweenIran and Russia, and, ofcourse, Qatar, ondeveloping Irans gas fields, possibly liquefying it, Askari said.

The Middle East Forum President Daniel Pipes argued Moscow would largely benefit economically fromIrans sanctions relief, butBeijing will profit even more.

Russia will get an economic boost fromIrans coming outfrom sanctions butI think China will be the larger winner, Pipes told Sputnik.

In order toacquire a better access tothe Chinese and Russian economies aswell asto secure greater advantage overthe United States, Iran will try tojoin the Shanghai Cooperation Organization asa full member, the experts said.Iran had wanted tojoin earlier, butI do not think it was invited. So I think Iran will join, the main reason Iran would liketo use it was leverage withthe United States and ofcourse Iran is trying toalso woe China, Askari said.

Through the Shanghai Cooperation Organization, China could become a major investor inIrans oil and gas industry, Askari explained.

It is a natural [move] forTehran tojoin the Shanghai Cooperation Organization and I expect it will be eager todo so toget closer tothe Chinese economy, Pipes agreed.

Iran's accession tothe Shanghai Cooperation Organization will have good prospects if Tehran follows throughwith the agreements onits nuclear energy program reached inLausanne onApril 2, Lavrov told Rossiya Segodnya onMonday.

The US will be the biggest benefactor out of this deal, because it can lift its self imposed ban on US exports to Iran. Yes those iPhones on sale in Tehran are illegally exported to Iran.
I believe China will also benefit from the lower oil prices after Iran raises export levels, and Iran will of course benefit not just the economy but to medicine as well.
Russia may not like the fact that Iran will raise exports, don't forget, Urals is not that different from Iranian Light and those refiners in the Mediterranean will have more negotiating power.
