Iranian president urges 'quicker' Steps with U.S. on detainees

The comments by Hassan Rouhani, who is in New York for the annual UN General Assembly, followed earlier suggestions from Iranian officials about the prospect of prisoner exchanges. While Rouhani has promoted Internet access, arguing it is necessary for modern economic life, he has said little about the Guards' persecution of Internet professionals and activists, and the filtering and monitoring of online activities by the Guards' cyber police continues.

Iran's president on Friday urged "quicker" efforts to free citizens held in both Iran and the United States, offering potential new signals on the fate of a Washington Post journalist and other Americans in Iranian hands.

Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko's office says he is also seeking a meeting with Obama. Such a dialogue "makes sense", said Under Secretary of State Wendy Sherman.

Notwithstanding the persistence of this situation and the prevalence of media censorship and Iranian propaganda, there are indications that the effectiveness of Iran's control of information is slipping.

Meanwhile, executions are at unprecedented levels: at the current rate, more than 1000 people will be executed in 2015, nearly all after judicial prosecutions severely lacking in due process and primarily for drug-related crimes for which worldwide standards do not allow capital punishment.

The presidents of China and Iran are among world leaders addressing a United Nations summit Saturday after the gathering unanimously approved an ambitious blueprint to tackle more than a dozen major global issues. He also said that under Iran's constitution, the executive branch can only be so active in dealing with the judiciary, controlled by conservative clerics often critical of Rouhani's administration and loyal to Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khameini. Those factors precipitated two other turning points: Obama's decision to greenlight secret talks and the election of President Hassan Rouhani, who won on a pledge to resolve the nuclear crisis and get sanctions lifted.

On 18 October, dubbed adoption day, Iran will begin taking steps to meet its obligations under the nuclear accord and the United States will issue some waivers for specific sanctions.

Ryan also warns in the letter that the nuclear deal will give "Iran a road map to a full-scale nuclear weapons program combined with advanced missile systems that can deliver those weapons".

According to the Preamble of the UN charter, "We the peoples of the United Nations determined ... to save succeeding generations from the scourge of war ... to reaffirm faith in fundamental human rights, in the dignity and worth of the human person". "A renewal of tension and animosity will not benefit anyone", Rouhani said. "I do not see anything resembling a military coalition with Russian Federation in Syria", he said. As such, its inclusion reflects the fact that deal opponents have reverted to playing the long game, setting the stage for the U.S.to abrogate the nuclear agreement when the time is opportune. Rouhani suggested it would be premature to discuss encounters between the two men. On September 19, Israeli forces found pipe bombs and other weaponry at the Temple Mount, where they said that their intervention helped to stop a planned attack.

"The administration disputes the figure of $150 billion to be released to Iran, but even a portion of that amount would provide significant resources to fund Iran's terrorism in the region-threatening our allies, " he said.

Khamenei said that since Muslims are facing these problems, they should "should think and understand your divine responsibility".
