Sputnik- Russian-made fighter jets may add significantly to the modernization of the Iranian Air Force, political analyst Emad Abshenass told Sputnik Persian.
In an interview with Sputnik Persian, political analyst Emad Abshenass touted the performance ofRussian fighter jets, saying that these aircraft could make an important contribution tomodernizing the Iranian Air Force.
The interview came afterIranian Brigadier General Ahmad Reza Pourdastan said earlier this week that Tehran is mulling the purchase ofnew jet fighters aspart ofa program aimed atmodernizing the country's Air Force, according to the news website mashreghnews.ir. Pourdastan made the remarks inthe wake ofQatar's announcement ofa multibillion-dollar deal withthe US tobuy 72 fourth-generation US F-15QA fighter jets, aswell asequipment and weaponry related tothese fighters.
Speaking toSputnik Persian, Emad Abshenass said that Iran's drive toupdate its Air Force is only natural because permanent threats and challenges make it necessary tocreate a balance ofmilitary power inthe region inorder toensure security.
In this vein, Russia "may help Iran cope withthe task," according toEmad Abshenass who said that the Iranian Air Force "should be, withoutdoubt, updated and modernized." "As forRussia, it remains one ofthe leading suppliers offighter jets inthe global combat aircraft market. During the Iran Air Show 2016, held onNovember 16-19 onthe island ofKish, the Russian fighters demonstrated an enviable potential.
Due totheir incredible technical capabilities Russian fighters even outstrip the US-made ones," he said. Abshenass added that Iran does not think that the Gulf nation's purchase ofoutdated US warplanes is a serious move, given that the planes have serious maintenance issues inthese countries. "Besides, right now we are intalks withMoscow topurchase the Russian combat aircraft which are superior tothose warplanes that the United States is supplying toQatar. Not tomention that Iran has specialists who are capable ofoperating these sophisticated aircraft," he said referring tothe Russian fighter jets.
Like many other countries, Iran wants only the most advanced warplanes inits arsenal, and updating its Air Force bybuying Russian-made fighters will be a key priority, according toAbshenass.
Earlier this month, Manouchehr Manteghi, head ofIran's Aviation Industries Organization, told Sputnik that Russian and Iranian cooperation inthe field ofaviation may result inthe two nations creating their own aviation market which would be completely independent fromany third party influence. He also said that the Iran Air Show 2016 turned outto be more representative thanthe recent Berlin Air Show, "according toour Russian colleagues.
