Iran making the most of OPEC deal, oil exports reach record levels

Sputnik- The recent deal to freeze oil output agreed by OPEC and other major oil-producing countries has resulted in a 16 percent increase in the oil price since late November; that increase may have been even more if it weren't for Iran's massive rise in production, Vladimir Sazhin told Sputnik Persian.

According tofigures fromOPEC, Iran produced an average of1.8 million barrels per day (bpd) in2015, when it was undersanctions imposed inconnection withits nuclear program.

These sanctions were lifted inJanuary last year followingthe agreement ofthe Joint Comprehensive Plan ofAction (JCPOA) betweenIran and the P5+1 group ofcountries, and sincethen Tehran has been keen toincrease its production topre-sanctions levels.

Iran's oil revenue increased by90 percent in2016, and the country is currently producing 3.7 3.9 million bpd. Oil exports have risen to2.5 million bpd, which exceeds the pre-sanctions level. A large amount ofoil instorage has allowed Tehran toachieve a rapid rise inexports. Over the pastthree months, Iran has sold 13 million barrels of30 million instorage, expert inMiddle Eastern affairs Vladimir Sazhin told Sputnik Persian.

"Iran is the third largest oil producer inOPEC. In late November, the organization took a historic decision tocut total oil production by1.2 million bpd; an exception was made forIran, which insisted onrestoring its market share afterthe removal ofsanctions restricting oil exports. Under the terms ofthe OPEC deal, Iran will be able toincrease production in2017 by90,000 bpd," Sazhin said.

As well asmillions ofbarrels instorage, Iran also has some recently discovered untapped resources. According toa recent statement bythe Director ofthe Ministry ofPetroleum's Center forResearch Mahmou Hazhan, Iran has confirmed a significant amount ofreserves ofshale oil inLorestan Province.

In fact, a lower oil price, and more production, suits Tehran. According tothe Director ofthe National Iranian Oil Company (NIOC) forInternational Affairs Mohsen Kamsari, the cost ofproduction forIranian oil is less than $10 per barrel.

On November 30 the OPEC cartel managed toreach a deal tocut output despiteopposition fromcountries likeIran, Libya and Nigeria, who demanded, and eventually received, exemption fromproduction cuts onthe grounds that they had not been producing atfull capacity. Led bySaudi Arabia, OPEC agreed tocut production fromJanuary 1 byabout 1.2 million barrels per day, or about4.5 percent ofits production, to32.5 million bpd. Moscow played a crucial part inthe formation ofthe deal, when Russian Energy Minister Alexander Novak spoke withSaudi Arabian Energy Minister Khalid Al-Falih topledge a production cut of300,000 bpd, providing half the total output reduction OPEC wanted fromnon-OPEC producers.
