Trump eyes getting more hard-hitting on Iran, here's why

Sputnik News- US President Donald Trumps reported decision to engage a more hardline stance towards Iran may include more provocative actions against Tehran and is likely to be ultimately aimed at reducing Iranian regional and global influence, according to Anthony Cartalucci, a geopolitical researcher and author.

Earlier, Reutersreportedciting US officials that the proposal is intended toincrease the pressure onTehran tocurb its missile programs and support formilitants. The plan also reportedly targets cyber espionage and potentially nuclear proliferation. The White House is also discussing a new stance onthe 2015 final deal onTehrans nuclear program, including tougher economic sanctions if Iran violates the deal, according tothe report.

Commenting onthe possible steps Washington could take underthe new plan, Cartalucci suggested that they may include "pouring immense resources intoproxy militant groups" and a "more open escalation ofalready ongoing operations."
"The final card the US appears tobe holding is the sponsorship and backing ofKurdish groups inSyria and Iraq, however, Syria and Iran also have ties withKurdish groups, and inmany places Washington seeks tofight Iran byproxy lacking any meaningful presence ofKurdish groups," he told Sputnik.

The report comes amidgrowing concerns that President Trump will pull outfrom theIran nuclear deal, which has been criticized sincehis presidential campaign. Commenting onthe issue, Cartalucci warned that Washingtons withdrawal fromthe agreement is only a matter oftime.

"The US always intended towithdraw fromthe deal and that the deal was always just another attempt tomaneuver the United States intoa direct conflict withIran. It's not a matter ofif the US will withdraw. It is a matter ofwhen," he argued.

The expert elaborated that the main reason behindtheUS seeking an escalation withIranis Washingtons geopolitical ambitions, and Iran stands inthe way ofa "unipolar world order."
"Iran represents one ofmany emerging nations pursuing an alternate international order predicated onnational sovereignty and multipolar international relations. Escalating tensions withTehran allows the US toprovoke an incident inwhich it can justify the amount offorce required totopple or egregiously setback Iranian power inthe region and onthe world stage," he pointed out.

Finally, according toCartalucci, such a policy is aimed atthe global political isolation ofother powers, namely Russia and China.
