'When it comes to Iran, US has no strategy' - Expert

Sputnik - Geopolitical commentator Roozbeh Aliabadi shared his views on Iran terror attack and words of Rudy Giuliani on 'overthrowing' Iranian government in an interview with Sputnik.

On Saturday, 29 people, including children, were killed ina deadly terrorist attack onIran's Revolutionary guard parade inAhvaz. Although President Rouhani did not directly blame the US forthe attack, he hinted that there was American support ofrebel factions inthe country which pose a continuous threat.

This comes asformer mayor ofNew York and close ally ofDonald Trump Rudy Giuliani spoke oftoppling the Iranian government ata rally ofIranian dissidents onSaturday.

Sputnik contacted Roozbeh Aliabadi, a geopolitical commentator, todiscuss the issue.

Sputnik: Do you agree withPresident Rouhani's accusation that it is US-backed factions could be responsible forSaturday's terror attack inAhvaz?

Roozbeh Aliabadi:What we are seeing is the Iranian authorities and the security forces inIran are associating that more tothe Al Ahvaziya and the separatist organizations. And they are saying because Al Ahvaziya has ties tovarious GCC countries both interms offunding and operations and tothe United States and Israel; they're really blaming that (whether because ofbeing ina stage ofparanoia or frankly based onthe fact they have evidence and the public doesn't) and they're saying that truly behindthese types ofattacks are the United States, Israel and GCC countries. And interestingly, they're not naming it, butthey're really referring toSaudi Arabia.

Sputnik: Is the US' goal asformer New York mayor Rudy Giuliani said atthe EMK conference onSaturday to overthrow' the Iranian regime'?

Roozbeh Aliabadi:If we look atMr Giuliani's statements asa barometer ofwhat the Trump administration wants I think we are being a bit nave about [the] Trump administration's policy towardsthe region. The fact ofthe matter is this administration does not have a grand national security strategy towardsIran. And what we've seen withPresident Trump he was more interested ingetting outof the nuclear deal, not because it was [the] Iran Nuclear Deal, butbecause it was President Obama's legacy so it was more ofa partisan decision. Now, looking atthe broader national security apparatus ofthe US government it is very divided. There are ideologues, if you will, who are thinking that the Iran regime should be overthrown, butthose ideologues do not have much political space right now inthe administration. Could this happen? It is possible; however right now the national security establishment inthe United States is very much inopposition [to] President Trump's decisions toleaving the JCPOA because they believe the broader ramifications ofnot being inthe JCPOA would bring, if you will, less stability toUS national interests and US, frankly, interests inthe broader Middle East.
