Al-Monitor - As the coronavirus continues to spread in Iran, some officials have called for more restrictive measures and even quarantine of highly infected areas in order to stop the spread of the virus that is overwhelming hospitals across the country.
According to the spokesman of Irans Health Ministry, Kianoush Jahanpour, in the last 24 hours there have been 595 new cases and 43 deaths. Since the outbreak of the virus, that brings the total cases confirmed to 7,161 and 237 deaths. The virus has spread to each of Irans 31 provinces, though the confirmed infections continue to be centered in Tehran, Qom, Alborz Gilan, Esfahan and Mazandaran.
A number of Iranian parliamentarians took to Twitter to request a quarantine of infected areas in order to stop the spread of the virus. Iranian parliamentarian Mohammad Reza Nafai called for a full quarantine of infected areas and a mandatory quarantine of Tehran, Qom and other infected centers. Abdulkarim Hosseinzadeh, Fatemeh Saeidi, Tayebeh Siavoshi and Hamideh Zarabadi released the same statement on their Twitter accounts, requesting the Supreme National Security Council order a "100% quarantine of infected areas and asking well-funded foundations such as the Mostazafan Foundation, the Social Security Investment Company and the Execution of Imam Khomeinis Orders to supply and distribute medical supplies, particularly protective clothing.
