Germany reiterates Iran?s key role in stabilizing Iraq

Berlin, Jun 26, IRNA -- The German government here Wednesday reaffirmed the crucial need to include Iran in global diplomatic efforts to help stabilize the situation in Iraq.
Deputy foreign ministry spokeswoman Sawsan Chebli told media representatives it was important to include regional actors like Iran and Saudi Arabia in the search for a political solution in Iraq.
She made clear there could hardly be a peaceful solution in conflict-stricken Iraq without the inclusion of regional players.

Chebli urged also a regional dialogue aimed at pacifying the situation in Iraq.

Her comments follow earlier remarks by German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier who called for direct talks between Iran and Saudi Arabia geared at de-escalating the Iraqi crisis.

Steinmeier stressed the conflict could hardly be resolved without some sort of understanding between Tehran and Riyadh.

Talks between both countries can help to calm down the situation in Iraq, he added.

Germany has repeatedly emphasized Saudi Arabia and Iran play a vital role in restoring peace and stability in Iraq.

Berlin has also voiced major concern over the worsening security situation in that country.
