Young Iranian b-ballers finish runner-up in WABA championship

Young Iranian basketball players have finished in second place at the fifth edition of the West Asian Basketball Association (WABA) U15 Championship in Tehran, being awarded the silver medal.
In a match held at the Basketball Hall of Azadi Sports Complex in western Tehran on Tuesday, the Iranian athletes emerged victorious and got past the Lebanese 69-66.

The Iranian squad opened the match in dominant fashion, taking an early lead. The Lebanese basketball players then took the game to the wire, and eventually rolled to a 22-19 win at the breather.

After the break, Iranian basketball players returned to action refreshed and seemingly regained in their composure. They made optimal use of their strengths and resources, and managed to grab the lead. They beat the opposite side 37-32 at the end of the first half.

Iranian basketball players extended their lead into the third quarter, and managed to overwhelm the Lebanese.

The final quarter played out much like the third, with Iranians winning most of the points in their way to pull out a 69-66 victory.

In another match of the day, Iraqs basketball team earned a 58-48 win over Syria to stand on top of the podium and win the title of the Tehran tournament.

Lebanon landed in the third position followed by Syria and Jordan in the fourth and fifth spots respectively.

The fifth edition of WABA U15 Championship started in the Iranian capital Tehran on August 1, and finished on August 5.

The sports event served as the first leg of the qualifying process to identify the WABA representatives for the 4th edition of Fdration Internationale de Basketball (FIBA) Asia U16 Championship to be played in Bangalore, India, next year.
