Tehran, Aug 16, IRNA - Minister of Science, Research and Technology Reza Faraji Dana, in a message on Saturday congratulated Professor Maryam Mirzakhani on winning the Fields Medal, known as the Nobel Prize of mathematics.
In his message, Faraji Dana said that receiving the most prestigious honor in mathematics by an Iranian woman is a glorious victory for Iran?s scientific and academic community and indicates the country?s scientific prosperity in the international arenas.
The minister also wished success and prosperity for Mirzakhani, a graduate from Tehran Sharif University of Technology.
Fields Medal is awarded every 4 years to between 2 and 4 young mathematicians who must be no older than 40.
Mirzakhani, a professor of mathematics at Stanford University, is the first woman ever to win the prize since it was established in 1936.
She was awarded the Fields Medal for her sophisticated and highly original contributions to the fields of geometry and dynamical systems.
