Russia and Iran discuss aircraft production as ties deepen amid Western pressure
Russia andIran will discuss launching production lines forTupolev Tu-204 airliners inIran as thetwo countries both paid-up members ofthe West's Black List boost their economic cooperation, asource close tothe negotiations told thePRIME news agency Tuesday.
Theunidentified source told theagency anintergovernmental commission had broached thequestion "in one form or another" inthe past, but without result. Thecommission will discuss it during ameeting Tuesday, thesource said.

Arange ofenergy andnuclear power agreements are also expected tobe signed onTuesday, following ameeting between Russian Energy Minister Alexander Novak andhis Iranian counterpart, Hamid Chitchian.

TheRussian government is pushing hard torevamp Russia's domestic aircraft industry, which has lost much ofits Soviet might due todecades ofunderinvestment, after Western sanctions over theconflict inUkraine highlighted thevulnerability ofRussian airlines, which fly mainly Boeing andAirbus planes leased fromEurope andthe U.S.

OnMonday, Russia announced it would work with China toproduce anew long-range airliner.

TheTu-204 is atwin-engine regional airliner that can carry about 160 to200 people, androughly stacks up tothe massively successful Boeing 737 andAirbus A320.

Russia earlier attempted tosell Russian-made Tu-204 aircraft toIran, but thescheme was derailed byU.S. Export restrictions, since theairplane uses engines made byU.S. manufacturer Pratt & Whitney.

Reuters reported inApril that Russia andIran were negotiating anoil-for-goods deal worth $20 billion that would undermine Western sanctions against theIslamic Republic.
