Every year around the globe more than 2 billion people are infected with Tuberculosis or TB as it is commonly called.
Although Iran has witnessed great progress in its fight against TB, but there is still work to be done. While in the year 1964, the TB notification rate was 143 per 100,000. In 2012 the latest year for which data is currently available the figure stood at 14.4 per 100,000.
The provinces hardest-hit in Iran are Sistan and Baluchestan, Golestan, Hormozgan, North Khorasan, South Khorasan, Khorasan Razavi, and Khuzestan. The incidence of TB in these seven provinces is at least double of national average.
In line with the national plans and priorities, the Global Fund project on TB in Iran, for which UNDP Iran is Principal Recipient, has been working with the Government of Iran to reach its goals in eliminating TB.To learn more click here.
To raise awareness and add their voice to the global campaign to stop TB, Iranian celebrities came together to shed light on the problems that TB patients are facing and the solutions to overcome them through unity and dedication to stop discrimination.
