Iranian cultural heritage activists raise concerns on Sush global registration
TEHRAN (ISNA)- A group of Iranian researchers, archeologists, artists, correspondents and social and cultural heritage activists raised concerns about specifications of area of Iranian ancient city of Shush sent to the UNESCO for inscription on the World Heritage list of the organization.
The activists signed a statement calling for more attention from inspectors of the International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS) at the time of exploring the historical site next month.

Shush ancient city, called Susa in Old Persian, is one of the oldest-known settlements of the region and the world.

The city was the capital of the Elamites and subsequently the winter capital of Achaemenians for some 2800 years.

Shush is a city in and the capital of Shush County, Khuzestan Province, southwestern Iran.

The statement has expressed concerns on the specifications of area of the ancient city presented by Cultural Heritage, Handicrafts and Tourism Organization when it sent Shush case to UNESCO last February.

Reports say that the organization has sent a case to UNESCO for inscription on the World Heritage list of the organization, in which it only introduced only 400 hectares of Shush as historical sites, while experts have said that in reality the area is about 1200 hectares.

This comes as ICOMOS experts would visit Iran next month to investigate the process of inscription of the ancient city to UNESCO.

The statement has called on ICOMOS experts to make a decision which protects both dignity of the cultural heritage and UNESCO credit.
