Irans Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif (R) and Lebanese Defense Minister Samir Moqbel meet in Tehran on October 20, 2014.[/caption]Irans Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif has reaffirmed Tehrans full support for Lebanon in its battle against extremist and terrorist groups.
The Islamic Republic of Iran, as in the past, will stand by the Lebanese nations resistance and army and is fully prepared for political, security and intelligence cooperation in order to counter extremist and terrorist groups, Zarif said in a meeting with visiting Lebanese Defense Minister Samir Moqbel in Tehran on Monday.
He added that overlooking the threat of terrorist groups in Syria over the past three years has been a big strategic mistake which resulted in adverse consequences such as insecurity and flood of refugees fleeing Syria for Lebanon and other countries in the region.
The Iranian minister stressed the importance of unity, solidarity and national consensus among all political groups and tribes in Lebanon to counter the influence of terrorists and extremism.
Zarif expressed hope that the Lebanese nation and political groups would manage to elect a new president through dialog as soon as possible.
Moqbel, for his part, said Irans assistance for the Lebanese army will certainly play a leading role in the countrys resistance against Takfiri and terrorist groups.
In addition to the Israeli regime, Lebanon currently faces two main problems which include the Syrian refugees economic and security issues and the danger of terrorism, the Lebanese minister added.
On September 30, Secretary of Irans Supreme National Security Council (SNSC) Ali Shamkhani said in Beirut that Tehran is ready to provide military equipment to the Lebanese army for the fight against terror.
Over the past months, Lebanon has been suffering from terrorist attacks by al-Qaeda-linked militants as well as random rocket attacks, which are viewed as a spillover of the conflict in Syria.
