The European Unions new foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini has called for the formation of an independent Palestinian state.
We need a Palestinian state. That is the ultimate goal and this is the position of all the European Union, she said during a visit to the besieged Gaza Strip on Saturday.

Pointing to the latest Israeli war against Gaza, a third one in six years, the top EU diplomat raised concerns about another potential war on the Palestinian territory, saying, It is not only the people of Gaza that cant afford having a fourth war, all the world cannot afford this.

Over 2,130 Palestinians, including around 570 children, lost their lives, and some 11,000 were injured in Israels latest offensive on the territory this summer.

Mogherini urged the international community to immediately act on the crisis in Gaza.

On Friday, Mogherini slammed Tel Aviv for its new plans to continue settlement expansion on the occupied Palestinian lands, saying the land grab plans are an obstacle to the peace process between Israelis and Palestinians.

Her comments about a Palestinian state comes as the Swedish government last month officially recognized Palestine as an independent state, confirming the Palestinians right to self-determination.

Palestinians are seeking to create an independent state on the territories of the West Bank and the besieged Gaza Strip with East al-Quds (Jerusalem) as its capital.

In November 2012, the United Nations General Assembly voted to upgrade Palestines status at the UN from non-member observer entity to non-member observer state despite strong opposition from Israel and the US.

The upgrade allows the Palestinians to participate in debates at the UN General Assembly and improve their chances of joining UN agencies and the International Criminal Court, where they could file complaints against Israel.
