TEHRAN (Tasnim) � The number of Iranian pilgrims that have travelled to Iraq so far to participate in Arbaeen ceremony in the holy city of Karbala has passed 750,000, Head of Iran's Hajj and Pilgrimage Organization Saeed Ohadi announced on Sunday.
Speaking to the Tasnim News Agency on Sunday, Ohadi said that about 72,000 Iranian nationals have arrived in Karbala by air while the bulk of the pilgrims have entered Iraq by land and are on their way to the holy city.



The Arbaeen ceremony, which is held to mark the 40th day after the anniversary of the martyrdom of Imam Hussein (PBUH), is one of the largest religious gatherings in the world and falls on December 13 this year.

The official also estimated that the number of Iranian pilgrims travelling to Iraq would reach 800,000.

He also advised the Iranian pilgrims that in case of any problems refer to the tents of Red Crescent Society Relief and Rescue Organization set up in the road between the Iraqi holy cities of Najaf and Karbala.

Iran on Friday dispatched a large convoy of medical staff to Iraq to provide services to the pilgrims who travel to the holy city of Karbala.

The convoy, consisting 25 vehicles, offers medical services to the pilgrims that travel the 80-kilometer route between Najaf and Karbala on foot.
