Torkan: Direct Chabahar port shipping lines to be launched

Chabahar, Dec 25, IRNA Increased capacity for taking side of larger ships in Chabahar jetty will soon lead to re-activation of regular direct shipping line between here and major world ports, Presidents adviser on free zones affairs said here Wednesday.
Chabahar-Zahedan railways expansion and its connection to trans-Iranian railways, South Pars gas pipeline, and exploiting of regions mines are among the necessities of development in this province and also in eastern Iran, said Akbar Torkan, after visiting the macro-scale infrastructure projects progress.
Launching of direct shipping lines and activation of new jetties for taking side of ships larger than TEU 1500 must soon take place in Chabahar, he added.

The presidents adviser said that after lunching the direct shipping lines and the development of the jetties, we can be witnesses to an eye catching evolution in the field of the regions goods transit and economic development.

Chabahar Port is a city in and capital of Chah Bahar County, Sistan and Balouchestan province of Iran. Chabahar is a free port (Free Trade Zone) on the coast of the Gulf of Oman. At the 2006 census, its population was 71,070, in 13,837 families. Chabahar is Iran's southernmost city.

Chabahar is situated on the Makran Coast of the Sistan and Balouchestan province of Iran and is officially designated as a Free Trade and Industrial Zone by Iran's government.

Due to its free trade zone status, the city has increased in significance in international trade. The overwhelming majority of the city's inhabitants are ethnic Balouch (an Iranian race) citizens who speak the Balouchi language.
