Syrian Kurds' top priorities in 2015 are to completely clear out Kobani from Islamic State (IS) militants and unite governing bodies in Syrian Kurdistan.
MOSCOW, December 27 (Sputnik) The main goal forKurdish forces fighting againstIslamic State (IS) militants is full liberation ofthe Kurdish-majority city ofKobani innorthern Syria, leader ofSyrian Kurds Saleh Muslim Mohammad told Sputnik Radio onSaturday.
Our major goal in2015 will be complete liberation ofKobani, Saleh Muslim said speaking offuture goals forKurdish fighters, adding that the current situation inthe city is complicated, asIslamists are trying toconsolidate their position inthe area.
The Islamists are trying tosecure a solid position there, we have tomop upliterally each house and even each room inthe city. But the recent advances made byour forces inKobani give us hope forvictory inthe nearfuture, he added.
Unification ofgoverning bodies ofthe Rojava cantons, situated inthe western part ofKurdistan inthe north ofSyria, is another priority set bythe Kurds forthe upcoming year, Muslim told Sputnik Radio.
Over the pastyear, Kurdish fighters have shown that they are able tostand upfor their rights, becoming "the only power inthe region that protects common human values," according tothe Kurdish leader.
As a result ofthe 2014 standoff it has become obvious that the Kurds turned froma regional factor toa regional player. It is now commonly recognized that they can influence the balance ofpower inthe region, defend their achievements and stand upfor their interests, Muslim said, noting that the international community has recognized Kurdish self-government.
This year, our governance system was legally recognized bythe international community. Both political and humanitarian support provided tous became a clear indication ofthis, Saleh Muslim stressed.
Kurds are Syrias largest ethnic minority. The Kurdish population also lives inTurkey, Iran, and Iraq. Syrian Kurds are striving towardcreating their own independent state and already announced their own provincial government ofWestern Kurdistan inJanuary.
Since September, Kurdish forces, backed bythe US-led airstrikes onIslamic State (IS) positions, have been fighting againstIS militants inthe Syrian city ofKobani which borders Turkey.
