Rouhani: Iran pursuing closer cooperation with EU
TEHRAN (FNA)- Iranian President Hassan Rouhani in a meeting with Cypriot Foreign Minister Ioannis Kasoulides in Tehran on Sunday said Iran wants to widen ties and cooperation with the European Union.
"Iran is looking for establishment of cordial relations and closer cooperation with the EU," President Rouhani said during the meeting.

"The Tehran-EU relations are experiencing daily growth under the present conditions and Cyprus as an EU member-state can play a more effective role in the further expansion of these relations," he added.

President Rouhani, meantime, pointed to the regional developments, and said, "The present conditions in the Middle East and even the Mediterranean region necessitate growing mutual cooperation, and specially more consolidated ties between Iran and the EU."

He stressed that violence and savagery anywhere and against any nation or race, nationality and religion is doomed to failure, and said, "When a terror attack takes place in Paris, London, Berlin or Washington, we condemn it to the same degree that we condemn the massacre of the people in Iraq, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Lebanon and Syria."

The Cypriot foreign minister, for his part, called for the widening of mutual cooperation with Iran, specially in economic fields, and said, "Today we have a good opportunity to further boost mutual cooperation in different areas "

Earlier today and during a press conference, Kasoulides underlined Iran's important role in fighting terrorism, and called for the further expansion of relations with Tehran.

"ISIL is threatening the region and beyond and the incidents in Paris showed that the global campaign on terrorism is highly important and Iran plays a key role in fighting terrorism," Kasoulides said in a joint press conference with his Iranian counterpart Mohammad Javad Zarif in Tehran.

He also stressed Iran's pivotal role in the region, and said the country can also help the process of presidential election in Lebanon.

Elsewhere, Kasoulides referred to his discussions with Zarif on the nuclear talks between Tehran and the world powers, and said, "Cyprus supports the process of the negotiations and we hope them to yield results."

He also referred to the good opportunities created for the expansion of relations with Iran, and said, "We have traditionally had good ties with each other, are two countries of one region, share identical bases of values and understand each other."
