Iran newspaper shuts down After #JesuisCharlie headline draws condemnation
After threats, Iran's government took action against the newspaper, which printed a George Clooney interview that contained the phrase.
MOSCOW, January 17 (Sputnik) Mardom-e Emrouz, an Iranian reformist newspaper, has been banned forpublishing the headline "I am Charlie" onits front page, AFP reported.A firm confrontation withthe desecration ofthe status ofthe Prophet Muhammad is the duty ofevery Muslim, conservative parliament member Zohreh Tabibzadeh announced, inopposition tothe newspaper, according toAl-Monitor.Officials previously condemned the newspaper forthe headline, withlegislators threatening the Minister ofCulture withimpeachment if she does not act onthe matter, according toFars News

The headline was part ofa George Clooney interview, and was quoting his support forthe newspaper.

The newspaper's editor, Mohammad Ghouchani, said inan interview that the cover was created beforeCharlie Hebdo printed the Muhammad cartoon, according toAl-Monitor.Iran officially condemned the attacks onthe Charlie Hebdo newspaper, butalso takes a highly critical stance onits publications ofMuhammad, which are considered insulting toMuslims.

On January 7, Charlie Hebdo's Paris office was attacked bygunmen, who murdered 12 people and injured another 11. Two ofthe terrorists responsible forthe attack were later shot bypolice afteran extensive manhunt, and a third suspect turned himself in.
