TEHRAN (FNA)- Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Marziyeh Afkham welcomed the recent agreement reached between the warring factions of Ukraine, and expressed the hope that implementation of the peace accord will result in sustainable peace and tranquility in the country.

On Thursday, after 16 hours of talks, the leaders of the contact group on Ukrainian crisis comprising France, Germany, Russia and Ukraine, also known as Normandy quartet, reached an agreement on ceasefire in Ukraine starting midnight February 15.

"We hope that the full implementation of this agreement will result in complete halt to the conflict and prevent killing of the innocent people," Afkham said on Saturday.

Russias President Vladimir Putin, German Chancellor Angela Merkel, French President Francois Hollande and Ukraines President Petro Poroshenko were in the Belarusian capital, Minsk, on February 11-12, for marathon talks over the ceasefire deal.

The negotiating sides agreed on the withdrawal of heavy weapons from Ukraines front lines and a ceasefire to begin from February 15.

Back in September 2014, representatives of Ukraine, Russia, and the self-proclaimed republics of Donetsk and Lugansk signed another ceasefire deal in the same city. However, the truce was violated on an almost daily basis by the Ukrainian military which at times received responses from the paramilitary troops and thus failed to bear any practical result.
