TEHRAN (FNA)- Iranian Police Commander Brigadier General Esmayeel Ahmadi Moqaddam and Tajik Interior Minister Major General Ramadan Rahimzadeh in a meeting in Tehran underlined the need for the enhancement of bilateral ties between the two countries.

During the meeting in the Iranian capital on Thursday, Brigadier General Ahmadi Moqaddam and Major General Rahimzadeh explored avenues for bolstering and reinvigorating mutual cooperation, specially in security fields.


"Iran is ready to broaden security relations with Tajikistan," the Iranian police commander said during the meeting.


The Tajik interior minister, for his part, voiced his country's willingness to cooperate with Iran in the campaign against extremism, terrorism and drug-trafficking.


Issues such as terrorism, extremism, drug-trafficking, smuggling weapons and the organized crime are the common threats posed to the regional countries, he said.


On Thursday, the Iranian and Tajik interior ministries signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to increase cooperation between the two countries in fighting drug trafficking and security issues.


The MoU was endorsed by Iranian Interior Minister Abdolreza Rahmani Fazli and his Tajik counterpart in Tehran.


�The (regional) countries� contribution to fighting terrorism and extremism can help establish lasting security in the region,� Rahmani Fazli said in a meeting with Rahimzadeh before inking the MoU.


�Tajikistan has good cooperation with Iran and other countries in that regard,� he said.


The Iranian minister touched upon border security between the two countries, saying, cooperation between Tehran and Dushanbe to tighten security along their common borders can bring about positive results for both nations.


In September, Iran's President Hassan Rouhani and his Tajik counterpart Imam Ali Rahmon in a meeting in Tajikistan signed 10 cooperation pacts and a joint statement.


The cooperation pacts signed by the Iranian and Tajik presidents in Dushanbe included security agreements between the two countries' interior ministries, an agreement on fighting drug trafficking and a cooperation pact between Iranian and Tajik chambers of commerce as well as an MoU between Iran's Persian Language Academy and Tajikistan's Language and Reforms Committee.
