TEHRAN (FNA)- Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Marziyeh Afkham extended her condolences to the Philippines over the tragic incident in Mindanao in which several people were killed and injured.

"The Islamic Republic of Iran has always supported establishment of peace and stability in Mindanao region in the Philippines," Afkham said in a statement on Sunday.

She also underscored the necessity for preventing hike in violence and reinvigoration of extremist groups which are opposed to peace in the region in a bid to pave the ground for political and security improvement and development of the Mindanao region.

Her remarks came after 44 members of the Philippine police were killed in the region over the weekend.
