Russia ready to sell S-300 missiles to Iran if sanctions fall

Russia may resume a deal to deliver S-300 surface-to-air defense systems to Iran if only the UN decides to lift its ban on arms sales to Tehran, a leading Russian defense expert said on Friday.

Negotiators fromIran, the United States and other world powers agreed onThursday toa framework fora final agreement tocurb Tehrans nuclear program.

Iran agreed inprinciple toaccept significant restrictions onits nuclear facilities forat least a decade and submit tointernational inspections.

In return, economic sanctions unilaterally imposed onthe Islamic Republic bythe US and EU will be lifted.

Russias Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov then said that a UN arms embargo againstIran should also go.

"Lifting sanctions onIran, including the arms embargo, would be an absolutely logical thing todo, said Igor Korotchenko, who heads the Global Arms Trade Analysis Center think tank inMoscow.

Of key importance tous is the delivery ofthe upgraded S-300 missiles toIran A contract tothis effect could be resumed onterms acceptable toboth Moscow and Tehran, he added.

In 2007, Russia contracted tosell toIran $800 million worth ofS-300 missile units. Moscow suspended the contract in2010 followinga UN security Council resolution tostop the sale ofarms toIran due toits controversial nuclear energy program.

Iran then sued Russia's state arms exporter Rosoboronexport atthe OSCE Court ofConciliation and Arbitration inGeneva, withMoscow eventually offering Tehran a settlement and a promise todeliver the Antei-2500 missile systems ata later date, which was not specified.

Tehran refused, insisting onthe implementation ofthe original deal.
