WASHINGTON (Sputnik) Nuclear program-related sanctions againstIran may be suspended sooner thanwithin a year, US State Department acting spokesperson Marie Harf said onFriday.
We expect forthe [anti-Iran sanctions] suspension piece tohappen generally withinthe first year, butagain, if Iran takes these steps more quickly, then the suspension can come more quickly, Harf told journalists ata press briefing.Harf added that Iran will receive sanctions relief only afterthe International Energy Agency (IEA) verifies that Tehran has taken steps toimplement the agreement reached inLausanne, Switzerland onThursday.
The United States and a number ofEuropean countries have imposed several rounds ofeconomic sanctions againstIran amidallegations that Tehran was trying tocover upits development ofa nuclear weapon fromthe international community.
