Obama phones Persian Gulf states to discuss Iran deal, regional stability

US President Barack Obama got on the phone with the leaders of the Arab Gulf states to discuss the framework nuclear deal reached with Iran two days ago.


WASHINGTON (Sputnik) US President Barack Obama called the leaders ofthe Arab Gulf states todiscuss the framework nuclear deal reached withIran, the White House said inreadout ofthe call.

The President today spoke withKing Hamad al Khalifa ofBahrain, Amir Sabah al Sabah ofKuwait, Amir Tamim al Thani ofQatar, and Crown Prince Mohammed al Nahyan ofthe United Arab Emirates, the White House said onFriday.

With each, the President shared details ofthe political framework reached betweenthe P5+1, the EU, and Iran ona Joint Comprehensive Plan ofAction regarding Irans nuclear program, it added.

Obama told the Gulf leaders the United States would continue tosupport stability and security inthe region despiteconcerns bythe Arab states aboutgrowing Iranian influence inthe region.The Gulf States and Saudi Arabia have expressed concerns that lifting the sanctions onIran aspart ofa final deal could empower Teheran ata time when its influence is growing inIraq and Yemen and Irans regional ally Syria is reportedly benefiting fromthe US-backed coalition airstrikes againstthe Islamic State.

The call comes againstthe backdrop ofa Saudi Arabian-led air campaign inYemen againstthe allegedly Iranian-backed Houthi rebels. The United States is providing logistical support and intelligence support tothe coalition againstthe Shiite Houthis.

Obama invited the Gulf State leaders tothe presidential retreat atCamp David later this spring inorder todiscuss regional issues and the Iran nuclear deal, the White House said.
