Over 490 tons of narcotics seized by police in Iran last year

TEHRAN (FNA)- The drug combat squads of the country's Law Enforcement Force have seized more than 490,000 kilograms of illicit drugs in countrywide operations in the last Iranian year (ended March 20, 2015), a senior Iranian commander announced.

"The Iranian police seized over 490 tons of narcotics last year," Commander of the anti-narcotics squad of Iran's Law Enforcement Police General Ali Moayyedi said on Saturday.

He noted that the seized illicit drugs included 390 tons of opium, 70 tons of hashish, 5 tons of morphine, 10 tons of heroin and 15 tons other types of narcotics.

The anti-drug squads of the Iranian Law Enforcement Police have intensified their countrywide campaign against drug-trafficking through staging long-term systematic operations since 2010.

The Iranian anti-narcotic police have always staged periodic, but short-term, operations against drug traffickers and dealers, but the latest reports - which among others indicate an improved and systematic dissemination of information - reveal that the world's most forefront and dedicated anti-narcotic force (as UN drug-campaign assessments put it) has embarked on a long-term countrywide plan to crack down on the drug trade since five years ago.
