EU FMs to discuss on Monday issues on Libya, Yemen, Iran nuclear deal

EU countries' foreign ministers will meet in Luxembourg on Monday to discuss the situations in Libya and Yemen, EU relations with Latin America and the Caribbean.


LUXEMBOURG (Sputnik) EU countries' foreign ministers will discuss inLuxembourg onMonday the proposals formaintaining security inLibya and the course ofnuclear talks withIran, aswell asmeet withtheir counterparts fromthe Eastern Partnership (EaP), an initiative governing EU relations withthe post-Soviet states.

The first issue onthe agenda is relations ofthe European Union withLatin America and the Caribbean. A summit onEU's relations withthe countries ofthe region will be held inBrussels onJune 10-11.Later inthe day, the ministers will discuss the situation inLibya. EU foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini is due topresent options forEU action that would contribute tostrengthening security inthe country incase offormation ofa national unity government inLibya.

The European Union does not exclude the possibility ofsending a mission toLibya toprotect key political and economic targets, butthe possibility ofa military operation is ruled out.

The ministers will also discuss the migration policy, which is closely related tothe situation inLibya. After another boat with700 migrants capsized while crossing fromLibya toItaly, Mogherini said EU member states should take urgent action toprotect migrants trying inthe Mediterranean.The working lunch will be devoted tothe situation inYemen, where the Saudi-led coalition is conducting a military operation againstHouthi rebels sincelate march, and then Mogherini will brief the ministers onthe nuclear talks withIran, which should result ina comprehensive agreement bythe end ofJune.

In the evening, the ministers will meet withtheir counterparts fromthe the Eastern Partnership, which includes Georgia, Moldova, Ukraine, Belarus, Armenia and Azerbaijan, todiscuss the Eastern Partnership Summit, scheduled forMay 21-22 inRiga, Latvia.

No decisions onsanctions the European Union imposed againstRussia overUkraine crisis are not expected atthe ministerial meeting.
