US Senate majority leader promises ‘vigorous debate’ on Iran agreement bill

US Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell called for a measure that would ensure US Congress’s involvement in the final say of the Iran agreement.

WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — The US Senate will hold a heated discussion on the Iran Nuclear Agreement Review Act next week, US Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said in a press release on Thursday.

“What we do know is that this bipartisan bill is underlined by a solid principle and a lot of hard work. It represents a real opportunity to give the American people more of a say on this important issue,” McConnell said. “And we look forward to a vigorous debate on it next week.”

McConnell called for a measure that would ensure US Congress’s involvement in the final say of the Iran agreement, according to the release.

“First, it would require that any final agreement reached with Iran be submitted to Congress for review; Second, it would require that Congress be given time to hold hearings, and ultimately take a vote to approve or disprove any Iran agreement, before congressional sanctions are lifted,” McConnell said in the release.

The new measure would also require the US president “to certify back to Congress every 90 days that Iran remains in compliance with the agreement,” and in case the president fails to do so, the bill would empower Congress “to rapidly re-impose sanctions” against Iran, the release read.

On April 14, the US Senate Foreign Relations Committee voted unanimously to advance The Iran Nuclear Agreement Review Act, introduced by the committee’s chairman Bob Corker, which gives Congress the power to review a final nuclear deal with Tehran.
US President Barack Obama said he will sign the bill that would give the US Congress power to review any final Iran nuclear deal because it is unlikely to affect the outcome of the negotiations.
