SCO welcomes progress on Iran nuclear program - organization head

Iran has applied to become a permanent member of the organization but countries sanctioned by the UN Security Council are not admitted.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) The Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) welcomes the progress made atrecent talks onIran's nuclear program, the organization's head, Dmitry Mezentsev, told RIA Novosti.

On April 2, Iran and a group ofsix international negotiators, including envoys fromRussia and the United States, agreed ona framework fora deal onthe Islamic Republic's nuclear program, which would ease sanctions againstTehran inexchange fora more transparent nuclear program.

"We welcome the progress made atthe 'six-lateral' Iran talks. But we have tobe realists, it is clear that progress cannot be swift insuch a complex issue, butwe hope that serious results will be achieved inthe foreseeable future," Mezentsev said inan interview.

According tothe SCO head, Iran has applied tobecome a permanent member ofthe organization butcountries sanctioned bythe UN Security Council are not admitted.

However, the organization acknowledges Iran's wishes toincrease its activity inSCO inits current state asan observer, and feels that it has great potential inthis role. Mezentsev praised Iran's work inthe organization todate.

The SCO comprises Russia, China, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan. Afghanistan, India, Iran, Mongolia and Pakistan are the SCO observers.

The Shanghai Cooperation Organization is a permanent intergovernmental body aimed atpromoting cooperation betweenits members inthe spheres ofpolitics, trade, security, science, energy, and culture. The SCO's main goals include promoting security and stability inthe region.
