Lebanon problems should be solved by Lebanese: Velayati

Beirut, May 18, IRNA Supreme Leader's Advisor in International Affairs Ali Akbar Velayati stressed on Monday that Lebanon problems should be solved by people of the country.

Talking to reporters at Beirut International Airport, visiting Velayati hoped the Lebanese people would soon choose their favorite president.

Since April, 2014, Lebanon is being run without a president.

About his trip to Beirut, Velayati said he was there to attend the closing ceremony of an international conference for Palestine.

He said he is attending the gathering at the invitation of the directors of the conference.

Palestine issue, Velayati said, must be the priority of the World of Islam as it has been before.

Such conferences on Palestine can help find ways to make the Palestinian resistance more powerful and also make their lands free from the dominance of the Zionist regime, said Velayati.

Today, the regional countries including Lebanon, Syria, Iraq and Yemen are suffering from the attacks by Takfiris, extremists and foreigners who are determined to sow discord among the Islamic countries, he added.

Velayati further urged the Islamic states to boost close cooperation in order to foil plots against the World of Islam.

He also urged unity among the Muslim nation.

About Tehran-Beirut ties, Velayati said Iran enjoys close and brotherly relations with all Lebanese groups.

Asked if Iran has any solution for Lebanese problems particularly for election of new Lebanese president, Velayati said Lebanese people are the only ones responsible for solving their problems.

Iran, he added, will spare no effort to help Lebanon.

Velayati arrived here on Monday morning. He is to hold talks with a number of top Lebanese officials including Prime Minister Tammam Salam and Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri.

The talks will focus on international and regional developments as well as issues related to bilateral ties.
