Maritime boundary agreement to deepen Tehran-Muscat ties: Iran's Zarif

TEHRAN (Tasnim) Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif on Tuesday referred to an agreement signed on setting the maritime boundary between Iran and Oman, and said it will further deepen the bilateral relations.

"The agreement will make the ties (between the two countries) more institutionalized, serious, and profound," Zarif said after signing the agreement with Oman's minister of interior.

Iran is now one step ahead in expanding its ties with Oman, the Iranian top diplomat stressed, adding "we are pleased to sign the agreement with one of (our) southern neighbors."

Zarif further noted that Tehran's ties with Muscat indicate the type of relations it seeks to have with all of its neighbors, especially the Persian Gulf littoral states.

The Iranian minister and Oman's Minister of Interior Hamoud Bin Faisal al-Busaidi on Tuesday signed an agreement to set the maritime boundary between the two countries in the Sea of Oman.

The agreement, which is the first of its kind since Iran's 1979 Revolution, was signed after 10 rounds of technical and legal negotiations between Iranian and Omani experts.

Zarif, who arrived in Oman on Tuesday, is visiting the Persian Gulf littoral state for talks on regional developments.
