Peak days of electricity consumption ahead, energy ministry warns

TEHRAN June 16(Shana)--Iran has enough potential for installation of 30 thousand megawatts of wind and 10 thousand megawatts of solar energies, roughly 40 thousand megawatts, across the country, deputy minister of energy for electricity affairs Houshang Felahatian said.

Citing Iran Renewable Energy Organizations data, he said that in order to persuade investment in generating electricity, ministry of energy has guaranteed buying renewable energies produced by private sector.

Currently just 250 megawatts of solar and wind energies are being produced in the country, he said, adding warm weather and approaching summer have raised electricity consumption to 46,5 thousand megawatts which is close to peak consumption in the country.

He noted that management of electricity consumption was one of the most important ways for leaving behind peak days of consumption asking people to take energy saving serious.

10 percent saving in energy consumption will make power outage unnecessary, he said.

In reference to using hydroelectric power plants capacities, he said energy ministry is expected to meet 7 to 8 thousand megawatts of its electricity needs from these power plants when electricity consumption peaks.
