French FM’s visit to Iran mere speculation: Iranian MP

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – An Iranian legislator said on Saturday that a visit to Iran by French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius has not become certain yet, describing the possible trip as a tactic to change Iran’s trend in the nuclear talks with world powers.

“The French officials seem to be evaluating whether to make the trip happen or not,” Abdolvahid Fayyazi, vice chairman of Iran-France parliamentary friendship group, said on Saturday.

He argued that such visits to Iran by the Western officials is meant to influence Tehran’s approach toward the nuclear talks with the Group 5+1 (Russia, China, the US, Britain, France and Germany).

“In its diplomacy, France takes on contradictory roles that are sometimes against Iran’s policies. We hope that in case that country’s foreign minister visits Tehran, their policies would become aligned with Iran a bit,” the lawmaker told ICANA.

His comments came after French weekly Actualite Juive reported that the Paris government is ready to send a minister to Iran if a nuclear agreement is reached, according to ICANA.

Iran and the Group 5+1 (Russia, China, the US, Britain, France and Germany) are negotiating to hammer out a lasting accord that would end more than a decade of impasse over Tehran's civilian nuclear program.

On April 2, the two sides reached a framework nuclear agreement in Lausanne, Switzerland, with both sides committed to push for a final deal until the end of June.
