Iranians will never forget 1953 US-led coup: Larijani

Iranian Parliament (Majlis) Speaker Ali Larijani says the Iranian nation will never forget the behavior of the United States and Britain regarding the 1953 coup in Iran.

This event will be a very dark point in the history of Irans ties with the US and Britain, Larijani said at a Majlis open session on Wednesday.

He added that foreign factors, mainly created by the US and Britain, and a series of internal issues triggered by negligence, suspicions and differences led to the coup and the overthrow of the government of then democratically-elected Prime Minister Mohammad Mosaddeq

In August 1953, the British and American intelligence agencies initiated a coup by the Iranian military, setting off a series of events, including riots in the streets of the capital, Tehran, which resulted in the overthrow and arrest of Mosaddeq.

Mosadeq, who was convicted of treason by a court martial, served three years in solitary confinement before dying under house arrest in exile in 1967.

The former Iranian premier had played a key role in the countrys 1951 movement that resulted in the nationalization of Irans oil industry, which had been mainly controlled by the British-owned Anglo-Iranian Oil Company (AIOC), now known as BP.

Larijani further pointed to recent remarks by Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei about the US plots to make inroads into the Islamic Republic, describing the comments as a realistic and precise warning.

The Parliament speaker urged all Iranians to pay heed to the Leaders warning.

Ayatollah Khamenei said on Monday that the Islamic Republic would not allow the US to make inroads into the country.

We will firmly block their way. We will not allow the US to make economic, political or cultural inroads into the country. We will counter such infiltration with all our power, the Leader stated.
