German FM to visit Iran in October

Berlin, Aug 24, IRNA -- German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier will visit Iran in October.

Speaking at a conference of the heads of German diplomatic missions at the foreign ministry in Berlin on Monday, Steinmeier said he will head to Tehran in October for political talks following what he called the 'historic' Vienna nuclear accord.

Steinmeier's planned trip comes in the wake of the July 19 landmark visit by German Vice Chancellor and Economic Minister Sigmar Gabriel, only five days after the Iran nuclear accord was sealed in the Austrian capital.

Germany's top diplomat reiterated that the Iranian nuclear deal could provide 'a momentum' for resolving other conflicts in the Middle East, including Syria.
Steinmeier insisted the Vienna accord had actually fostered greater security in the Middle East.

The agreement has proven that deep-seeded, complex conflicts which are shadowed by mistrust and even animosity, can be settled peacefully, Steinmeier said.
