No Russian soldiers fighting militants in Syria: Syrian minister

Syrian Information Minister Omran al-Zoubi says no Russian soldiers have been deployed to his country in order to launch attacks against Daesh Takfiri militants and other foreign-sponsored terrorist groups.

Speaking in an exclusive interview with Lebanon-based Arabic-language al-Manar satellite television network, which was broadcast on Monday, Zoubi described bilateral relations between Damascus and Moscow, including military ties, as historical and deeply rooted.

However, he stressed that there are no Russian soldiers, ground forces, marines or pilots, on Syrian soil.

The top Syrian official went on to say that Russia supports a political solution to the ongoing conflict in Syria and the efforts being made by the United Nations (UN)s Special Envoy to Syria, Staffan de Mistura.

Zoubi said Moscow has so far hosted two rounds of talks between representatives from the Damascus government and the foreign-backed opposition as part of attempts to create an atmosphere for dialogue and joint initiatives meant to resolve Syria crisis.

The Syrian information minister also held the United States fully responsible for the current militancy in his country, noting that without Washingtons green light neither Saudi Arabia nor Turkey would have been able to fan the flames of the Syrian conflict.

He said the most viable and promising solution to the Syrian crisis is the one that takes note of national principles, sovereignty, national integrity, comprehensive reconciliation, counterterrorism as well as reconstruction.

The foreign-sponsored conflict in Syria, which flared in March 2011, has reportedly claimed more than 240,000 lives up until now.

The United Nations says the militancy has displaced more than 7.2 million Syrians internally, and compelled over four million others to take refuge in neighboring countries, including Jordan and Lebanon.
