US coordinates Syria bombing with Russia through Israeli hot line

Despite officially denying any cooperation, Russia and the US secretly coordinate their air campaigns in Syria through Tel-Aviv to avoid collisions of aircraft, according to intelligence sources speaking to Israeli media.

Last Thursday, Russias Ministry ofDefense announced the creation ofa "hot line" betweenthe Russian and Israeli militaries. That channel provides both parties witha direct link inorder toavoid incidents betweenaircraft overSyria.

"The first stage oftraining was conducted yesterday [Oct. 14] oncooperation betweenRussian air forces and the Israeli air force toavoid dangerous incidents inthe sky abovethe Syrian Arab Republic," a statement fromthe ministry read.

On Sunday, personnel fromboth militaries continued that coordination, practicing the procedures necessary foravoiding accidental collisions.

According tomilitary and intelligence sources speaking toDebka File, Arab-speaking flight controllers will likely stand ready onRussias end ofthe hotline atAl-Hmeineem air base nearLatakia. Russian-speaking officers will man Israels end, and according toIsraeli media, Western air controllers will use that hotline tocoordinate their own aircraft, rather thanestablish their own direct channels withMoscow.

Communication is vital inthe increasingly crowded skies overSyria. Russias anti-terror campaign began onSeptember 30, and has sincecarried outhundreds ofsorties againstthe self-proclaimed Islamic State terrorist group.

The US-led coalition has continued its own bombing campaign, though withoutthe authority ofthe legitimate government ofSyrian President Bashar al-Assad. While no collisions have yet taken place, there have been close calls.

But despiteair traffic concerns, Washington has refused Moscows offers toestablish a similar hotline.

"Were not interested indoing that, aslong asRussia is not willing tomake a constructive contribution toour counter-ISIL effort. Russia has its own agenda right now that theyre pursuing ontheir own," White House spokesman Josh Earnest told reporters.

"So its not particularly surprising tome that President Putin would resort, insome desperation, totry toconvince us tojoin them. But the fact is that is a request thats fallen ondeaf ears."

In reality, however, the US is coordinating actions ofits aircraft withRussia, butis doing so throughIsrael instead ofestablishing its own direct "hot line" withMoscow, according toIsraeli intelligence and military sources speaking toDebka File. Due topolitical reasons, however, the US can't admit it, insisting that the two nations continue toendanger their pilots bynot informing each other abouttheir military flights.

On Sunday, the US and Israel also began a massive military exercise known asBlue Flag. Including US, Israeli, Greek and Italian air units, those drills will last fortwo weeks, adding even more air traffic toalready overcrowded airspace.
