The Latvian Defense Ministry is considering a possibility of sending its soldiers to Iraq to help fight against the Islamic State militant group, the ministry's spokesman said on Monday.
RIGA (Sputnik) Last week, another Baltic state, Estonia, announced plans tojoin the fight againstthe Islamic State militants in2016.
Prior tothat, the countrys government approved a bill, adopting an open mandate which allows upto 50 Estonian servicemen may be directed toaddress conflicts inany part ofthe world.
"In any case, politicians are todecide onLatvia's participation inthis operation," Kaspars Galkins told reporters.
Latvia's combat role is outof the question, butthe Latvian experts might help local units fight the terrorists, the spokesman added.
A US-led international coalition, comprising over60 nations, has been launching airstrikes againstthe ISIL inSyria and Iraq since2014, withoutDamascus' approval.
On September 30, Russia began an air campaign againstthe Islamic State terrorists inSyria ona request fromSyrian President Bashar Assad.
Latvia, a member ofthe European Union, has been a member ofNATO since2004. The Latvian servicemen took part inoperations inIraq, Afghanistan and the Balkans.
